This page explains different ways how to say "I love you too" in Spanish or how to respond when someone says they love you.
How to say I love you too in Spanish
I assume you already know how to say I love you in Spanish. There are several ways, but the most common phrase is Te quiero, which you can say to anyone you like or love, including family and friends.
Alternatively, you can sometimes say Te amo (only to your spouse or lover and only in some Spanish speaking regions) and a few other variations.
But let's now assume that someone told you Te quiero (I love you) and you want to respond with "I love you too". In Spanish it is:
También te quiero.
There is one extra word at the beginning: también. It means too or also. Notice that it has an accent on the é, which is also where you put stress when you pronounce the word (tam-bieh-n – but don't make it too long).
Alternatively, you can put the word también to the end of the phrase and it will also be correct:
Te quiero también.
One thing you can't do is put también in the middle, between te and quiero (Te también quiero is incorrect).
I love you too with Te amo
When you are responding to Te amo, it is best to use the same verb. When someone tells you Te amo (I love you), you respond with:
También te amo.
Or with:
Te amo también.
The logic is the same as with Te quiero.
I love you too including the "I"
You may have noticed that the phrases above don't include any word for "I".
For example, Te quiero también is literally "you love too" (the word order is reversed compared to English).
This is very common in Spanish. Personal pronoun representing subject is often omitted in a sentence, because you can recognize the subject from the form of the verb (unlike English), from context, or from both.
Nevertheless, it is neither incorrect nor entirely uncommon to include the subject pronoun, especially when you want to stress it. In case of I love you too, you can say:
Yo también te quiero.
Yo te quiero también.
Yo también te amo.
Yo te amo también.
The word yo of course means "I" in Spanish.
"I love you too, baby" in Spanish
If you want to make the response even better, you may add something to call your partner at the end. For example: "I love you too, baby." Common phrases in Spanish are:
Yo también te quiero, nena. (to a girl/woman)
Yo también te quiero, nene. (to a guy)
Yo también te quiero, bebé.
In most dictionaries you will probably find "baby" translated as bebé in Spanish. However, in some Spanish speaking countries and regions it is only common to use bebé for baby as infant, but not for baby as lover. Therefore, the latter phrase may be unsuitable.
You can of course use the English "baby" that everyone understands:
Yo también te quiero, baby.
All the above phrases work with amo as well as quiero.
Mi amor and Mi corazón
There are many other ways how you can call your lover in Spanish. Amor (love) and corazón (heart) are among the most popular:
Yo te quiero también, mi amor.
I love you too, my love.
Mi corazón, yo te amo también.
My heart, I love you too.
Mi means my. You can also include it in the examples with nena, nene, or bebé above. For example:
Yo también te quiero, mi bebé.
Corazón is also useful in many other love phrases such as I love you with all my heart or My heart is broken.
